Follow your artist’s instructions
Aftercare helps protect the healing skin, and instructions may vary with the tattoo and dressing used (UCLH patient guidance). Ask your artist to explain the care routine and provide it in writing.
Gentle cleaning
When it is time to remove the dressing, gently wash the tattoo with warm water and fragrance-free soap, then pat dry with a clean towel (NHS FYI tattoo guidance). Use the moisturiser or ointment recommended for your tattoo, following the instructions you have been given (NHS FYI tattoo guidance).
When to seek medical advice
Increasing redness, swelling or yellowish discharge can be signs of infection and need medical assessment (NHS FYI tattoo guidance). Do not rely on a photograph or an online message to diagnose a possible infection.
Seek prompt medical help if the area becomes very red or swollen, or if you develop a fever; these can indicate a serious infection (UCLH patient guidance).
